Teaching

Teaching

First-year engineering, human-centered design, and engineering pathways, taught in the United States, Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

Approach

How I teach

I teach engineering as a practice that students do, not a body of facts they watch. My courses are built around projects with real stakeholders: students observe, interview, and listen before they define a problem, then prototype, test, and revise in studio-style sessions and design critiques.

I start from what students bring. Many of my students have come through transfer, dual enrollment, or another country’s school system, as I did, and I design for those routes rather than around them. Culturally responsive and ethical practice runs through the design process instead of sitting in a separate unit.

I also teach judgment about AI. Students learn to evaluate AI-generated work critically, to explain their reasoning without it, and to decide when it helps and when it gets in the way of learning. That classroom work feeds directly into my research and into Usewright.

Results and redesigns

Outcomes

  • 100% course completion in the redesigned, fully online EGS 2053 dual-enrollment course for high school seniors at Florida International University.
  • Leads an instructional team of six undergraduate and three graduate teaching assistants across three first-year sections at Ohio State, with weekly planning and feedback meetings.
  • Founded First Class Profs’ Academy (2008–2014), a tutoring service for more than 200 engineering undergraduates a year, with a team of more than 15 tutors.

Curriculum design

  • Redesign of EGS 2053, Foundations of Interdisciplinary Engineering, with Drs. Monica Cardella and Bruk Berhane (2023–2024).
  • Committee member for the redesign of the PhD in Engineering and Computing Education at FIU to incorporate AI and emerging technologies (2024–2026).
  • Model United Nations curriculum for high school seniors, approved by the UAE Ministry of Education (2020).
  • Restructured the mechanical engineering capstone course, Assigned Project I, at LAUTECH (2014).

In students’ words (EGS 2053)

This design process is beginning to make more sense since you started teaching us.
Thank you for always engaging us with activities that make our milestone deliverables easier.

Ongoing development

  • Teaching and Learning to Build AI Fluency Teaching Endorsement, Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning, Ohio State (expected January 2027).
  • SoTL and DBER Learning Community, 2026–2027 cohort, Drake Institute (expected April 2027).
